'God of War' Movie Screenwriters Talk Humanizing Kratos

Speaking to IGN, Piranha 3DD writers Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton talked about their plans for the long-in-development God of War feature film including showing Kratos before he was the Ghost of Sparta, and how Clash of the Titans put the initial plans for the movie in disarray.

The duo, who've just wrapped a polish on Guillermo Del Toro's Pacific Rim, talked about coming onto the project after the departure of writer David Self (Road to Perdition), whose draft was written before Clash of the Titans, 300, or Immortals had made their way to the screen. Those bloody, stylized Greek myth pieces apparently made Sony rethink their approach to the material.

And one of those changes in approach was to humanize the vengeful Kratos, according to Dunstan: "In the same way that Batman was grounded with Christopher Nolan's rendition, we were attempting to do that with Kratos so that when we meet him -- like they're doing in this newest game, which is sort of a prequel to the original -- we're seeing him before he became the Ghost of Sparta, when he was just a Spartan warrior and he had family and kids."

So does that mean we'll see Kratos cracking a smile? Dunstan likens it to some other unnamed movie where the hero is a man without fear, saying that the problem with that kind of character is that it's hard for audiences to empathize with them. Their plan is to make Kratos a bloodthirsty man in search of vengeance while also making his quest an intimidating one. Part of that will involve Ares being a more proactive villain in the piece. Melton explains, "In the game, you know, he's immortal, and he doesn't really do much besides raid Athens... so we're trying to build him up a bit more, too, so that he can become a true villain."

The film is still without a director or completed script.
