Hiring of CEO revives Augusta membership debate

As a club that prides itself on tradition, Augusta National again is in the middle of a membership debate it thought it was done with nearly a decade ago.

Just seven days before the Masters, no less.

The last four chief executives of IBM ? a longtime corporate sponsor of the Masters ? have been members of the exclusive golf club in Augusta, Ga. The latest CEO of the computer giant happens to be a woman. Virginia Rometty was appointed this year.

One problem ? a woman has never worn a member's green jacket since Augusta National opened in 1933.

"I think they're both in a bind," Martha Burk said Thursday evening.

Burk, who spearheaded an unsuccessful campaign 10 years ago for the club to admit a female member, said Friday morning on CNN she fears Augusta and IBM will work out a "sham solution" to make the issue go away.

"The company has a huge responsibility here not to undermine its first female CEO," Burk said. "If they accept anything less than full member ? or resign their sponsorship, which is another option ? they're going to undermine their new CEO. And they'll be making a statement that they don't consider her an equal to her predecessors."

Still to be determined is how much traction the topic will muster going into the Masters.

Augusta National, through a spokesman, declined comment in keeping to its policy that membership issues are private. IBM did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

Rometty is said to play golf sparingly. Her greater passion is scuba diving.

Hootie Johnson, chairman of the club a decade ago, ignited the controversy back then when he said that while Augusta might one day have a female member, it would be on the club's timetable and "not at the point of a bayonet."

Burk applied pressure on just about everyone connected with the club and with the Masters, the major championship that garners the highest TV ratings. She demanded that four companies drop their television sponsorship because of discrimination. She lobbied PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem not to recognize the Masters as part of the tour schedule.

It didn't work. The protest fizzled in a parking lot down the street from the club during the third round of the 2003 tournament.

"We did raise the issue," Burk said on CNN. "If we had not done that, this would not be on the table now."

Not only is the debate back, this time it has a face ? Rometty, a 31-year veteran of IBM who has been ranked among the "50 Most Powerful Women in Business" by Fortune magazine the last seven years. Rometty was No. 7 last year.

The chairman of Augusta National ? and the Masters ? is Billy Payne, who ran the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. When he replaced Johnson as chairman of the club and of the Masters tournament in 2006, he said there was "no specific timetable" for admitting women.

The question was raised at the 2007 and 2010 Masters. Both times, Payne said membership issues were private.

Rometty succeeds Sam Palmissano at IBM, which runs the Masters' website from the bottom floor of the media center. According to a list published by USA Today in 2002, the three CEOs prior to Palmissano also were members ? Louis Gertsner, John Akers and John Opel.

As the corporate sponsors became the target, Johnson wound up doing away with TV sponsorship for two years at the Masters to keep the corporate partners ? IBM, Coca-Cola and Citigroup ? out of the fray.

Only IBM returned as a TV sponsor for the 2005 Masters. The others were SBC Communications and ExxonMobil.

Burk said it should not be that easy for IBM to hide if the debate gains momentum.

"What IBM needs to do is draw a line in the sand ? 'We're either going to pull our sponsorship and membership and any ancillary activities we support with the tournament, or the club is going to have to honor our CEO the way they have in the past,'" Burk said in a telephone interview Thursday evening. "There's no papering over it. They just need to step up and do the right thing.

"They need to not pull that argument that they support the tournament and not the club," she said. "That does not fool anybody, and they could undermine their new CEO."

Burk said she would not be surprised if IBM pressured Rometty to say she doesn't want to be a member.

"Really, I don't think it's her responsibility," Burk said. "It's the board of directors. They need to take action here. They don't need to put that on her. They need to say, 'This is wrong. We thought the club was on the verge of making changes several years ago, and we regretfully end our sponsorship to maintain her credibility and the company brand.'"

The debate returns just in time for one of the most anticipated Masters in years. Tiger Woods finally returned to winning form last week at Bay Hill and is considered one of the favorites, along with U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy. Eight of the top 20 players in the world ranking have won heading into the first major of the year, a list that includes world No. 1 Luke Donald and Phil Mickelson.

Now comes a sensitive issue that dogged the tournament a decade ago, and might not go away easily. Women can play the course at Augusta National, but cannot join the club or wear the Augusta green jacket, which is reserved for members and stands as a status symbol in business and golf.

Rometty could become a central figure in the argument over female membership whether she wishes to or not.

"We have a face, we have a resume, we have a title and we have a credible reason to do it that doesn't involve Martha Burk," Burk said.

Burk said she is no longer chair of the National Council of Women's Organizations. She had planned to step down until the first flap with the Masters began in the summer of 2002. Now, she said she runs the Corporate Accountability Project for the council, a project born from her battle with Augusta.

The captain of the plane stormed through his plane rambling about a bomb and threats from Iraq on Tuesday until passengers on the Las Vegas-bound flight tackled him to the ground just outside the cockpit, passengers said. The captain was taken to a hospital after suffering a "medical situation" on board that forced an emergency landing in Amarillo, Texas, the airline said. (AP Photo/Julie Jacobson)

(AP) ? No one recalls JetBlue Airways captain Clayton Osbon coming unhinged before. Not the airline that let him fly for 12 years, the neighbors in his secluded waterfront community or the friends he tried selling weight-loss shakes to on the side.

Now federal prosecutors have charged Osbon following his bizarre unraveling aboard Flight 191 to Las Vegas, describing in court records a midair breakdown they say began with cockpit ramblings about religion and ended with passengers wrestling him to the cabin floor.

Witness accounts of Osbon telling his co-pilot "things just don't matter" and sprinting down the center aisle ? yelling jumbled remarks about Sept. 11 and Iran ? baffled longtime friends and fellow pilots who said they couldn't remember previous health or mental problems.

Osbon, 49, was instead described as an affable aviator who took his private plane for joyrides in his spare time, shied from talking politics and hosted Super Bowl parties. His father was also a pilot who died in a 1995 plane crash while on a sunken treasure hunt, according to a Wisconsin newspaper in the town where his family lived.

"I can't say whether it's shock or disbelief," said Justin Ates, a corporate jet pilot and friend who also lives in Richmond Hill. "It's hard to describe what you feel when you see something that's completely 100 percent out of character."

Osbon is charged with interfering with a flight crew following his bizarre outburst Tuesday on the flight that began in New York and was diverted to Amarillo, Texas. He was still being held at a hospital there Wednesday and being medically evaluated.

Under federal law, a conviction for interference with a flight crew or attendants can bring up to 20 years in prison. The offense is defined as assaulting or intimidating the crew, interfering with its duties or diminishing its ability to operate the plane.

One aviation expert said he couldn't remember a pilot being prosecuted on the charge, which reads as though it was written with passengers in mind.

"I've been doing this for more than 50 years, and I can't recall anything like this," said Denny Kelly, a private investigator in Dallas and former Braniff Airlines pilot.

A pilot with JetBlue since 2000, Osbon acted oddly and became increasingly erratic on the flight, worrying his fellow crew members so much that they locked him out of cockpit after he abruptly left for the cabin, according to a federal affidavit. He then started yelling about Jesus, al-Qaida and a possible bomb on board, forcing passengers to tackle him and tie him up with seat belt extenders for about 20 minutes until the planed landed.

"The (first officer) became really worried when Osbon said 'we need to take a leap of faith,'" according to the sworn affidavit given by an FBI agent John Whitworth. "Osbon started trying to correlate completely unrelated numbers like different radio frequencies, and he talked about sins in Las Vegas."

Investigators said they were told that Osbon scolded air traffic controllers to quiet down, then turned off the radios altogether, and dimmed the monitors in the cockpit. He allegedly said aloud that "things just don't matter" and encouraged his co-pilot that they take a leap of faith.

"We're not going to Vegas," Osbon told his co-pilot in midflight, according to the affidavit.

Osbon, described by neighbors as tall and muscular, "aggressively" grabbed the hands of a flight attendant who confronted him and later dashed down the cabin while being chased. Passengers wrestled Osbon to the ground, and one female flight attendant's ribs were bruised during the struggle. No one on board was seriously hurt.

JetBlue spokeswoman Allison Steinberg said Osbon had been suspended pending a review of the flight. JetBlue CEO and President Dave Barger told NBC's "Today" show that Osbon is a "consummate professional" whom he has "personally known" for years. He said nothing in the captain's record indicates he would be a risk on a flight.

In Richmond Hill, a bedroom community on the Georgia coast just south of Savannah, next-door neighbor Bud Lawyer said he's having a hard time believing the man on the news is his good friend.

Osbon went to church but seldom talked about it and never seemed overly zealous, Lawyer said. And while the friends would occasionally chat about events in the Middle East, their talk never went beyond casual conversation about the events in the news, he said.

"He wouldn't intentionally hurt anyone," Lawyer said. "He's a kind-hearted, generous, loving teddy bear. It's totally out of character for this to happen to him."

Another longtime friend, Bill Curley, said Osbon is a Christian who has become "increasingly" religious but wasn't fanatical.

Osbon was also a direct marketer for health shakes sold by Visalus Sciences, a marketing company based in Troy, Mich. Ashley Guerra, a fellow Visalus marketer in Georgia, said she saw Osbon just last weekend and that he appeared friendly and helpful as usual.

In an interview last year with the local magazine Richmond Hill Reflections, Osbon said he first got in the cockpit when he was 6 or 7 and had ambitions of becoming a motivational speaker. His father and another man died after the engines in their plane failed over Daytona Beach while en route to look for treasure in Fort Lauderdale, according to 1995 story in the Washington Island Observer, a newspaper in the small Wisconsin community where Osbon's parents had a home.

Osbon's LinkedIn profile states that he received a degree from aeronautical physics from Hawthorne College and a physics degree from Carnegie Mellon University. However, Carnegie Mellon spokeswoman Teresa Thomas said Osbon attended the school for three years never obtain his degree.

"On a Sunday morning he'd call me up and say, 'Let's go for a flight,'" neighbor Erich Thorp said. "Even with that little Piper Cub, before he would take it off the ground he would spend 15 minutes checking everything out. He had a whole list he would check. He was as careful a pilot as you could imagine."

(AP Photo/Apple)

(AP) ? Chinese workers who often spend more than 60 hours per week assembling iPhones and iPads will have their overtime hours curbed and their pay increased after a labor auditor hired by Apple Inc. inspected their factories.

The Fair Labor Association says Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., the Taiwanese company that runs the factories in China, is committing to a reduction of weekly work time to 49 hours, the legal Chinese maximum.

That limit is routinely ignored in factories throughout China. Auret van Heerden, the CEO of the FLA, said Hon Hai, also known as Foxconn, is the first company to commit to following the legal standard.

Apple's and FLA's own guidelines call for work weeks of 60 hours or less.

Foxconn's moves are likely to have an impact across the global technology industry. The company employs 1.2 million workers in China to assemble products not just for Apple, but for Microsoft Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co. and other pillars of U.S. technology.

Foxconn's factories are the last step in the process of manufacturing iPhones and other Apple devices, most of which have hundreds of components. Research firm IHS iSuppli estimates that Apple pays $8 for the assembly of a 16-gigabyte iPhone 4S and $188 for its components. It sells the phone wholesale for about $600 to phone companies, which then subsidize it to be able to sell it for $200 with a two-year service contract.

Ricardo Ernst, a professor at Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business, said companies play a risky game when they raise their manufacturing costs. U.S. consumers have shown little inclination to pay more for products that are made in the U.S. as opposed to China.

But iSuppli's figures suggest that if Apple were to absorb a Foxconn wage increase that keeps salaries level while cutting average working hours from 60 to 49 per week, it would pay less than $2 extra to have an iPhone made.

Other electronics companies, particularly PC makers such as Dell and HP, earn less profit on what they sell and could see a deeper impact.

Thomas Dinges, an analyst at iSuppli, said Apple's competitors will probably have to accept the price increase too, since it's framed as a moral issue.

"At this point, it's politics. It's not really economics," he said, adding that there are few alternatives to Chinese factories for most of these products.

The FLA auditors visited three Foxconn complexes in February and March: Guanlan and Longhua near the coastal manufacturing hub of Shenzhen, and Chengdu in the inland province of Sichuan. They employ a total of 178,000 workers, with an average age of 23.

Average monthly salaries at the factories ranged from $360 to $455. Foxconn recently raised salaries by up to 25 percent in the second major salary hike in less than two years.

Apple enormous profits ? $13 billion in October-to-December quarter ? have made it the world's most valuable company, worth more than $570 billion. It's also put the spotlight on the way its products are made.

In one-man Broadway play, actor Mike Daisey told of visiting China and talking to underage and injured Foxconn workers. Public radio program "This American Life" used Daisey's monologue in a show about Foxconn on Jan. 6, but retracted it two weeks ago, saying that Daisey had fabricated key parts of it, including him meeting 13-year-old workers.

The FLA said it didn't find instances of child or forced labor.

Apple has kept a close watch on its suppliers for years, and in January took the further step of joining the FLA. The organization has audited overseas suppliers for clothing manufacturers, but Apple was the first electronics company to join. It also commissioned the FLA to produce a special audit of Foxconn's factories.

"Our team has been working for years to educate workers, improve conditions and make Apple's supply chain a model for the industry, which is why we asked the FLA to conduct these audits," Apple said in a statement.

Apple CEO Tim Cook visited a Foxconn factory in Zhengzhou, China, on Wednesday.

The Washington-based FLA has its roots in a 1996 meeting of multinational companies and nonprofits convened by President Clinton, who challenged industry to improve conditions for garment and shoe workers. Its 19-member board is composed equally of representatives from member companies, universities and nonprofits like the Global Fairness Initiative. The organization is funded by participating companies.

Labor unions have criticized Apple's use of the FLA, insisting that audits are a "top-down" approach. Foxconn's workers would be better served, they believe, by being able to organize.

"The report will include new promises by Apple that stand to be just as empty as the ones made over the past 5 years," said SumOfUS.org, a coalition of trade unions and consumer groups, ahead of the release of the report.

The FLA found few safety violations, noting that the company had already dealt with problems like blocked fire exits and defective protective gear. It's also taken step to reduce the amount of aluminum dust in the air, after the metal created an explosion at a Foxconn factory in Chengdu last year, killing four workers.

The FLA said Foxconn has been recording only accidents that caused work stoppage but is now committing to recording and addressing all accidents that result in an injury.

Heerden said his auditors found Foxconn workers are the happiest with their jobs when they work 52 hours a week, well below the amount they often put in. Reducing their hours to 49 hours should help Foxconn retain workers in the long run, he said.

The FLA found that many workers at the Foxconn factories want to work even more overtime, so they can make more money. Foxconn told the FLA that it will raise hourly salaries to compensate workers for the reduced hours.

Heerden said that it's common to find workers in developing countries looking for more overtime, rather than less.

"They're often single, they're young, and there's not much to do, so frankly they'd just rather work and save," he said.

The auditors examined one years' worth of payroll and time records at each factory, conducted interviews with some workers and had 35,000 of them fill out anonymous surveys.

Apple has started tracking the working hours of half a million workers in its supply chain, and said that 89 percent of them worked 60 hours or less in February, even though the company was ramping up production of the new iPad. Workers averaged 48 hours per week.

Top 5 reasons why landscape lighting improves your home

by admin on March 28, 2012

Landscape lighting is a beneficial tool to home owners that is often overlooked. Home owners will find that when they install landscape lighting around their entrance way and other viewable areas will benefit in the following ways:

1. Improves Appearance Of Home. Landscape lighting will provide your home with a more up-scale appearance. This enhancement is beneficial to your home and your neighborhood.
2. Increases The Value Of Your Home. Homes that enter the market with landscape lighting sell for a higher price than homes that are not enhanced in this fashion. Sellers must remember that the outside of the home is the first thing a potential buyer sees. If a good first impression is not made, it will be hard to sell the amenities on the inside of the home.
3. Improves Security. Homes that have landscape lighting are safer for people that are entering and exiting the home at night. Would-be thieves are also more attracted to dark homes than ones where they can possibly be seen.
4. Improves Safety. When you are returning home for the evening, it is to your benefit to have a lit walkway to help you avoid falling. Since home owners are responsible for any accidents that occur to guests on their property, installation of lights can decrease the chances of accidents happening.
5. Increases Usable Space. If you have a patio or pool area in your home, well placed lighting in these areas will allow you to enjoy them in the evening and at night.

Outdoor lighting is a very simple home improvement that can be done in just a few hoursrsquo; time. This type of project is easy for the DIY individual, or can be easily completed by a landscape professional. Outdoor lights are not expensive, and the benefits the home owners receive from installing outdoor lighting are immense.

Has Social Anxiety Got You by the Short Hairs ... - Health and Fitness

If social anxiety has you paralysed, you?re missing out on so many good experiences. Would you like to help yourself lose some of those horrible fears? You actually can, with the new acupressure self-help technique called EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques).

Lots of other people have reported boosting their self-confidence through EFT, and finding out how much richer life becomes.

EFT tapping is simple EFT is a technique which needs you to gently fingertap on key acupuncture points on your face and body while you briefly focus on a specific problem.

What this does is simply balance your meridian energy system, so it?s totally safe. But results can be awesome, surprising, and often fast.

?How on Earth could tapping help me??

What is unexpected is the huge variety of life improvements you could achieve through focussing this fast technique on various aspects of your life. You can read accounts online and in EFT books by countless people who have already helped themselves this way.

A little effort in learning, and in using this technique when you?re not feeling great, can open up so much permanent improvement in your social anxiety problems, that in a while, it?s likely you?ll find that you can?t believe yourself.

?What do I have to do??

Let?s take a hypothetical case.

When teenage Jim?s out in public, he can?t stop thinking that everyone is looking at him and judging him. He ?knows? that none of those people will like what they see, he can read their minds.

But he?s desperate to go on a date with a lovely new girl he did manage to have a conversation with. He?s agonising now about how it will all go wrong. He?ll be tongue-tied, fall over his feet, make a fool of himself. She?ll be disgusted and brush him off. Then he?ll be back to Square 1, which he finds an uncomfortable place rather than an exciting challenge.

As an EFT tapper, Jim would list separately every fear he has about the date, and he would rate the intensity of each fear 0-10, 10 being the greatest.

Then he would apply the basic 30-second tapping routine he has learned, to each fear separately. He would aim at reaching 0 for each count.

As his stress lowers on each point, he would automatically find that his negative thinking improves, because that?s how it works. And it could work in minutes. For example, focusing on his thought, ?Even though I know I?ll make a fool of myself?? while he taps, Jim would soon find himself thinking, ?Well, maybe not all the time??

As he continues the tapping routine, he could easily lower this fear, and even reach 0.

At that point he?s likely to feel optimistic that even if he is awkward at some point in the date, it could be something so small that she won?t even notice. Or maybe he feels now that he won?t look awkward at all. And maybe she?s feeling nervous too, so as he has stopped feeling so fearful himself, he might concentrate on helping her feel easier.

And so on, right through the range of his paralysing fears.

What?s the likely result? New confidence! He?s now willing to take a chance! At the very least, this date will give him more experience around girls. And she does want to go on this date with him. Go, man!

A deeper cause for social anxiety

The above approach is EFT?s help method for current fears and doubts, and it?s priceless. Even a small improvement is valuable.

But a deeper approach is possible. What has caused Jim?s extreme nervousness? There is more than adolescent worries going on here. Something or someone undermined Jim?s confidence in himself and in life, much earlier. But that does not have to be a life sentence.

As an energy method, EFT can also identify and neutralise past causes, although Jim might need more experienced EFT help to make this permanent improvement.

Social anxiety causes misery, but now you can do something about it yourself, in an easy, simple way that has a high success rate. And no-one has to know what you?re doing! EFT is tops for anxiety and stress.

SILAO, Mexico (AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI urged Mexico's children to be messengers of peace, then prepared for the highlight of his visit to this violence-troubled country: Sunday's open-air Mass in the shadow of the Christ the King monument, one of the most important symbols of Mexican Catholicism.

Benedict wanted to come to Guanajuato state specifically to see and bless the statue, which Pope John Paul II always wanted to visit but never did, said the Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi.

The 72-foot (22-meter) bronze monument of Christ with its outstretched arms serves as a potent reminder to Mexicans of the 1926-1929 Roman Catholic uprising against the government and its anti-clerical laws that prohibited public Masses like the one Benedict will celebrate before an estimated 350,000 people.

Guanajuato state was the site of some of the key battles of the Cristero War, so-called because its protagonists said they were fighting for Christ the King, and this region remains Mexico's most conservatively Catholic.

The statue "expresses an identity of the Mexican people that contains a whole history in relation to the testimony of faith and those who fought for religious freedom at the time," said Monsignor Victor Rene Rodriguez, secretary general of the Mexican bishops conference.

Benedict will fly over the monument, modeled after Rio de Janeiro's Christ the Redeemer statue, by helicopter on his way to celebrate Mass and will bless it from the air, Lombardi said. After nightfall Sunday he will remotely inaugurate its new lighting system.

On Saturday, Benedict met with President Felipe Calderon in Guanajuato city and later told about 4,000 children massed in the colonial-era city's Peace Plaza that they are each a "gift of God to Mexico and the world."

"The disciple of Jesus does not respond to evil with evil, but is always an instrument of good instead, a herald of pardon, a bearer of happiness, a servant of unity," Benedict said. "I will pray for all of you, so that Mexico may be a place in which everyone can live in serenity and harmony."

He called on the young to be messengers of peace in a country traumatized by the deaths of more than 47,000 people in a drug war that has escalated during a government offensive against cartels.

Eight relatives of victims of violent crime were invited to meet the pope as he left Guanajuato's government palace, Calderon's office said. Lombardi noted it wasn't a sit-down meeting so much as a brief greeting.

While the pope drew a rapturous response from the faithful, his second day in Mexico was not without criticism ? particularly concerning the church's treatment of children and sexual abuse.

Victims of Marcial Maciel, the founder of the Legionaries of Christ, launched a book Saturday containing documents from the Vatican archives showing that Holy See officials knew for decades that Maciel was a drug addict who sexually abused his seminarians.

Alberto Athie, former priest and one of three co-authors of "The Desire Not to Know," called on Benedict to publicly recognize the church's responsibility for Maciel's abuse.

"The church won't fall. On the contrary, it will be reconstructed," Athie said.

The 84-year-old pope, who will be going to Cuba on Monday, did not directly address the scandal during his limited remarks Saturday. But Lombardi said his words about the need to protect children from violence referred also to the need to protect them from priestly sexual violence.

Lombardi insisted that neither Benedict nor John Paul covered up for Maciel as the book alleges. Benedict, when he was Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, headed the office that received the sex abuse complaint from Maciel's victims in 1998; it took the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith eight years to sentence Maciel to a lifetime of penance and prayer.

"I have to say that both popes were men, men of truth and transparency," Lombardi said. "I think it's truly unjust to consider Pope Benedict as someone who worked against the truth and transparency."

Benedict has taken up John Paul's drive to reach out to young Catholics, rallying millions of young faithful to join him for World Youth Days, the Catholic youth festivals held once every three years. And he has made the young a focus of his trip to Mexico.

That fits with the Vatican's drive to re-evangelize parts of the world where Catholicism has weakened, trying to rally the next generation to embrace a faith that their parents may have abandoned. While Europe has been Benedict's focus to date, Mexico also has seen its number of Catholics fall.

"The Mexican church feels like it's lost a few generations of Catholics," said Joseph Palacios, a professor of Latin American studies at Georgetown University, citing the battles over liberation theology that drove many left-leaning Catholics away. To get back its numbers, the Mexican church is "moving forward with the new generation," he said.

Tens of thousands, many of them teenagers, on Saturday watched the pope's remarks on big screen televisions set up in a pilgrim camp at the site of the papal Mass planned for Sunday. The atmosphere was like a rock concert as the TVs showed the pope emerging on a balcony in Guanajuato, with campers letting go a roaring chant of "Benedicto, Benedicto."

"We young people are getting closer to the church and to God, instead of getting closer to drugs and violence," said Juan Daniel Pacheco, 18, of Apaseo el Grande in Guanajuato state as he sought shade with his friends at one of the campgrounds that were quickly filling with faithful arriving for Sunday's Mass. "We are young people who will be able to change Mexico."

Of the 43.5 million Mexicans under age 20, 36.2 million are Catholic, or 83.2 percent, just under the national average. The largest group of Mexicans overall are children aged 5 to 9 ? a prime target for Benedict's efforts to rebuild a church that has fallen victim to the same secular trends that have emptied churches across Europe.

At the entrance to Guanajuato, Benedict received the keys to the city and then traveled by popemobile past faithful crowded along the cobblestone streets of the historic colonial-era city.

People packed narrow streets, balconies and rooftops and cheered wildly even as it started to sprinkle. Children and teenagers ran through crowds as Benedict passed to catch another glimpse of him. At one point, someone handed him a baby through an open window of the bulletproof popemobile. He kissed the baby and an aide passed the child back.

A group of 13 indigenous teenage girls traveled for 20 hours cramped in a van from northern Mexico just to see the pope officiate Sunday's Mass. Once in Guanajuato, the Tarahumara got an invitation from the office of Mexico's first lady, Margarita Zavala, to be in the crowd standing right beneath the balcony where Benedict gave his message to Mexico's youth.

The girls, aged 12 to 17, spent three days sewing their traditional dresses for the pope's visit.

Sister Sanjuana Oliva Briones, a Tarahumara Indian who led the group, said the girls were excited and happy with the experience.

"For many it is the first time they have been to a city. Others understand little Spanish," she said.

Pininfarina Cambiano Concept: One That Got Away

The 2012 Geneva Motor Show was a smorgasbord of automotive excess. For proof of its kaleidoscopic scope, consider that despite our expansive coverage, we still couldn't feature every oddity in the show-- like this Pininfarina Cambiano concept.

?

Inside, wood repurporsed from the European oak poles used to mark channels in the Venice lagoon (known as?briccole) wears the surface scars from mollusks, offering a textural contrast to the ultrasmooth seats. A timepiece by?Bovet 1822 can be removed from the dash and worn as a wristwatch...

?

Pininfarina

?

... beneath the skin, an electric motor at each wheel provides power, peaking at 600 kW, combined. Similar to the Jaguar C-X75 concept, the Cambiano recharges its batteries with a?diesel-fueled 50 kW Bladon Jet turbine.

?

So, how about the exterior?

?

Pininfarina

?

Well, we don't think it lives up to the cabin, and that's putting it politely...?but hey, concepts push boundaries for a reason, right? That's why we can fall in love with an interior, and just as easily write off the sheetmetal.

Sexual Madonna video opens with prayer

YouTube

Madonna in her new video, "Girl Gone Wild."

By Courtney Garcia

Controversy about a suggestive Madonna video that includes religious imagery mixed with sexual content? Is it the 1980s again?

Madonna?s new video, ?Girl Gone Wild,? premiered on E! Tuesday night, and already is provoking mixed reactions. Some love it, some hate it, some are concerned about the use of relligious imagery, and others are saying that the singer is stealing ideas from Lady Gaga.

The bondage-infused video for the song "Girl Gone Wild" is packed full of sexual images mixed with religious symbolism. It begins with Madonna reciting the Catholic Act of Contrition, a prayer of repentence, and quickly displays a group of half-naked male dancers grabbing their crotches. Later, one man dons a crown of thorns.

But religious imagery and shocking the Catholic Church in which she was raised is nothing new for Madonna, and for some critics, that's exactly the problem.

?Madonna is finally running out of ideas and rehashing her own back catalogue? badly," writes Amelia Proud in the U.K.'s Daily Mail. "Madonna?s look echoes her Blonde Ambition period from the late ?80s into the early ?90s, but unlike this early video, which was banned by MTV for containing imagery of sadomasochism, voyeurism, and bisexuality, it is hardly shocking.?

Even some fans?aren't loving the video. Many point out that it seems to borrow elements from Lady Gaga's "Alejandro" video, while others point out that Gaga borrowed from Madonna, meaning the Material Girl is actually reusing her own concepts.

?She looks amazing but I gotta say, men in heels? How 'Alejandro' of her, writes Katie G on E! Online. "Maybe it's a nod to Gaga for using Madge's imagery herself. Like the song.?

?Yawn ... I like Madonna and the song but the "watch me be controversial" video is so overdone,? comments a reader going by vciera. ?The 'Alejandro' video reference is a good one and that was Gaga copying Madonna, I thought it was a tired concept then.?

While the Catholic Church has yet to comment on the religious aspects of the video, fans were quick to respond.

?Is there anyone out there disgusted that she is debasing the Act of Contrition?" wrote one fan on E! Online.?"Hasn't she played that whole game out? She is tired and reaching for straws via shock value."

Despite any criticisms or religious counters she may spark, Madonna continues to abide by her own motto.?In another song off?her upcoming "MDNA" album, due out March 26, she sings,?"I don't care what the people say. I'm gonna be all right, gonna live fast and I'm gonna live right. If you have a problem I don't care."

And many fans remain loyal to the singer, controversy or no.

Ray Andrew Koh offers support on Madonna?s Facebook page, ??50 something, 60s, 70s etc. I?ll still watch what Madonna will do."

You can watch the video here.?(Warning: Graphic content.) What do you think? Tell us on Facebook.

What do you think of Madonna's new video?

Logitech selects Bracken Darrell as president right now, next CEO in 2013

When current CEO Guerrino De Luca took over the reigns at Logitech following huge losses on Google TV and its business in the EMEA region, we knew it was only temporary and now Logitech has appointed a successor. Bracken P. Darrell is coming over from Whirlpool (where he lead its efforts in, you guessed it, Europe, Middle East and Africa) to be its new president effective April 9th. The plan is for him to take over for De Luca on January 1st, 2013 (who will return to his former role as Chairman), while leading an improved, slimmed down product roadmap -- the theme is said to be quality over quantity -- for the second half of the 2013 fiscal year. On the conference call De Luca indicated more would be revealed during an upcoming earnings announcement in April which, combined with a hint at a Harmony remote refresh during the last call in January, has us marking our calendars already.
