(AP) ? Gary Carter was nicknamed "Kid" for good reason.

His smile, bubbly personality and eagerness to excel on a ballfield made him a joy to watch at the plate and behind it.

Even his Hall of Fame bronze plaque at Cooperstown shows him with a toothy grin ? the Kid forever.

The star catcher, whose single for the New York Mets in the 1986 World Series touched off one of the most improbable rallies in baseball, died Thursday. He was 57.

Carter was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor last May, two weeks after finishing his second season as coach at Palm Beach Atlantic University. Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz said Carter died at a hospice in the West Palm Beach, Fla., area.

"I am deeply saddened to tell you all that my precious dad went to be with Jesus today at 4:10 p.m.," Carter's daughter Kimmy Bloemers wrote on the family website. "This is the most difficult thing I have ever had to write in my entire life but I wanted you all to know."

Carter was an 11-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove winner. His bottom-of-the-10th single in Game 6 of the 1986 Series helped the Mets mount a charge against the Boston Red Sox and eventually beat them.

With curly, blond locks flaring out from beneath his helmet, and a rigid, upright batting stance, Carter was immediately recognizable. And anyone who watched Carter recognized his zest.

"Nobody loved the game of baseball more than Gary Carter. Nobody enjoyed playing the game of baseball more than Gary Carter. He wore his heart on his sleeve every inning he played," Mets Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Seaver said.

After Carter's diagnosis, the Mets began playing a highlight reel of his accomplishments on the video board during games at Citi Field and posted this message: "Our thoughts are with you Gary. From your millions of fans and the New York Mets."

"His nickname 'The Kid' captured how Gary approached life," the Mets said Thursday in a statement. "He did everything with enthusiasm and with gusto on and off the field. His smile was infectious. ... He was a Hall of Famer in everything he did."

Carter played nearly two decades with the Mets, Montreal, San Francisco and the Los Angeles Dodgers. He led the Expos to their only playoff berth and was the first player enshrined in Cooperstown wearing an Expos cap.

"Gary was one of the happiest guys in the world every day," Mets teammate Mookie Wilson once said.

Carter was known as much for his effervescent personality as his talents. He earned his nickname as an eager teen in his first major league camp and the label stuck for the rest of his career, and beyond.

"An exuberant on-field general with a signature smile who was known for clutch hitting and rock-solid defense over 19 seasons," reads his Hall plaque.

He was especially pumped during the biggest moment of his career. The powerful Mets were down to their last chance in the '86 Series when Carter stepped up with two outs. No one was on base, and New York was trailing Boston 5-3 in the bottom of the 10th inning in Game 6.

Carter said he had just one thought in mind: "I wasn't going to make the last out of the World Series."

True to his word, he delivered a clean single to left field off Red Sox reliever Calvin Schiraldi. Kevin Mitchell followed with a single, and when Ray Knight also singled, Carter scampered home from second base.

As Carter crossed the plate, he clapped his hands, pointed at Wilson on deck and clapped again. Moments later, Bill Buckner's error scored Knight for an amazing 6-5 win. Carter rushed from the dugout to join the celebration at home plate, catcher's gear already on.

Overshadowed by the rally was the fact that Carter had tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the eighth. Then in Game 7, Carter drove in the tying run in the sixth inning, and the Mets went on to win their most recent championship.

"What he added to the team was character. His approach to the game was contagious. It spread to the rest of us. He helped each of us understand what it took to win," former teammate Darryl Strawberry said.

Carter homered twice over the Green Monster at Fenway Park in Game 4 and totaled nine RBIs in that Series. Since then, only two players have gotten more in a World Series (Mike Napoli for Texas in 2011 and Sandy Alomar Jr. for Cleveland in 1997 each had 10).

Overall, Carter hit .262 with 324 home runs and 1,225 RBIs with the Expos, Mets, San Francisco and the Los Angeles Dodgers. He set the major league record for putouts by a catcher, a testament to his durability despite nine knee operations.

"Driven by a remarkable enthusiasm for the game, Gary Carter became one of the elite catchers of all-time," Commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement. "Like all baseball fans, I will always remember his leadership for the '86 Mets and his pivotal role in one of the greatest World Series ever played."

Carter twice was the MVP of the All-Star game. He won the award in 1981 by homering twice in baseball's first game after a players' strike that lasted two months. He remains the lone player to have a two-homer performance in an All-Star game and a World Series game.

Carter also set the NL record for games caught.

"I relied on Gary for everything when I was on the mound, including location, what pitch to throw and when. Even when I didn't have my best stuff, he found a way to get me through the game. He was just a warrior on the field," former Mets ace Dwight Gooden said.

Carter, however, spent his first full season in the majors primarily as Montreal's right fielder. His first All-Star appearance came that year, in 1975, as a defensive replacement in left field for Pete Rose.

Carter was recognized, too, for his contributions off the field when he was honored with the Roberto Clemente Award.

"Gary Carter was everything you wanted in a sports hero: a great talent, a great competitor, a great family man, and a great friend," former Mets pitcher Ron Darling said.

Carter hit his first major league homer in September 1974 off future Hall of Famer Steve Carlton as a 20-year-old rookie ? Carter homered 11 times against the ace lefty, his top victim.

Carter spent his first 11 years with the Expos and was part of a solid core that put them into the 1981 playoffs. They beat the defending champion Philadelphia Phillies in a new first round created after the strike split the season into two halves, but lost to the Dodgers in the NL championship series.

"Learning of Gary's passing feels as if I just lost a family member," former Expos pitcher Steve Rogers said. "Gary and I grew up together in the game, and during our time with the Expos we were as close as brothers, if not closer. Gary was a champion. He was a 'gamer' in every sense of the word ? on the field and in life. He made everyone else around him better, and he made me a better pitcher."

A perennial fan favorite, Carter returned to Montreal in 1992 for one final season. His last swing was a memorable one ? he hit an RBI double in the seventh inning at Olympic Stadium, left for a pinch-runner to a huge ovation from the home crowd and walked away after that 1-0 win over the Cubs.

Carter was elected to the Hall in 2003 on his sixth try. He had joked that he wanted his Cooperstown cap to be a half-and-halfer, split between the Expos and Mets. The Hall makes the ultimate call on the logo.

Carter pleased Canadian fans by delivering part of his induction speech in French. Born and raised in California, he took a Berlitz course to help him learn the language after the Expos drafted him.

"It's nice to know that even though my body feels like an old man now, I will always be a kid at heart," Carter said on his election.

The Expos traded him to the Mets after the 1984 season for Hubie Brooks, Mike Fitzgerald, Herm Winningham and Floyd Youmans. Carter turned out to be one of the last missing pieces on a New York team that already had the likes of Strawberry, Gooden and Keith Hernandez.

He made an immediate impression ? it just took a little extra to get it right in his Mets debut in 1985. In the season opener at Shea Stadium, Carter took strike three, had a passed ball that gave St. Louis a run and watched Cardinals pitcher Joaquin Andujar steal a base against him.

But in the bottom of the 10th inning, Carter hit a home run that won the game and drew a standing ovation plus chants of "Gary! Gary! Gary!"

"What a way to start," Carter said with a grin afterward. "Hit by a pitch, strike out looking, a stolen base, a passed ball and then the home run."

"There's not enough words to describe what it feels like," he said. "I'll certainly remember this the rest of my life."

It wasn't the only time he bounced back from a rugged start. Slumping badly in the 1986 NL championship series, Carter hit a winning single in the bottom of the 12th to beat Houston in Game 5, putting the Mets within one win of the World Series.

A two-sport athlete as a boy, Carter won the 7-year-old national division of the NFL's first Punt, Pass & Kick skills competition in 1961. He was a pitcher and shortstop in Little League and switched to catching in high school after a scout suggested it was the fastest path to the big leagues, turning down a chance to play football at UCLA.

Carter stayed in baseball after his playing days ended. He became a broadcaster for the Florida Marlins, coached and managed for the Mets in the minors, managed two independent minor league teams and coached in college.

The only hint of negative publicity Carter drew came a few years ago when he appeared to be campaigning for the Mets' managing job though it was already filled.

Carter, however, always had a winning touch. At the ballpark or away, he greeted fans with a hearty handshake ? many marveling at how his big right hand had swallowed up theirs.

At the Hall ceremonies in July, new inductee Bert Blyleven mentioned Carter. "Gary, keep battling the way that you always have," he said to the crowd.

Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt said Carter continued to inspire him in later years. In a 2006 column for The Associated Press, the former Phillies star recalled the pure elation that enveloped Carter when he was voted into Cooperstown.

"No player ever appreciated that call to the extent he did. The joy it brought him, his family, and friends, especially me, was so real and pleasantly genuine, I ate it up and still do," Schmidt wrote.

"He does not take it for granted. He will wear his emotion, from this election, on his sleeve the rest of his life," he wrote.

Bond considered for Colorado terrorist suspect (AP)

DENVER ? A federal magistrate judge is considering whether a Colorado man should be released on bond as federal prosecutors pursue terrorism charges against him.

A decision could come as early as Tuesday afternoon in the case of Jamshid Muhtorov (MOO'-tor-ov), of Aurora.

The 35-year-old Uzbek refugee is accused of vowing to fight with the Islamic Jihad Union, which the United States says is a terrorist organization. He was arrested Jan. 21 in Chicago on his way to Turkey.

During a hearing Tuesday, prosecutors argued he should be held. They say he bought a one-way ticket to Turkey, leaving his family behind.

However, defense attorneys say the government's evidence doesn't show the entire context of what was going on in his life and his reasons for trying to go to Turkey.

World Radio Day: What Radio Means in a Technology World ? Blind ...

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has declared Feb. 13 World Radio Day to emphasize the ongoing value radio contributes to an ever-changing technological world. Despite the proliferation of the Internet, radio remains the single most important medium for communication and information access to the widest possible audience. Radio still goes many places the Internet infrastructure can?t, especially in many of the world?s developing nations. So, why do we need to give special emphasis to radio and what does the technology mean to us?

Have we taken radio for granted in our high-tech world? I think the answer is an emphatic ?yes!? We may not realize this, but many of us are constantly on the air nowadays. It?s no longer just about the DJ on the broadcast radio airwaves, the ham radio operator keying Morse Code on a primitive transmitter or the pilot talking with her air traffic controllers to ensure a safe flight.

The world is now comprised of an uncountable number of tiny radios found in many electronic devices we have come to enjoy and use every day. We know, for instance, that an iPhone 4S contains at least six distinct radios: a radio capable of receiving and transmitting signals on the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band, a radio that can talk to Bluetooth devices such as headsets and keyboards, two different radios for talking on the CDMA and GSM cellular frequencies, another radio to facilitate Internet access through the cellular data networks and, finally, a GPS receiver. When you use your iPhone, it is safe to say you are probably using at least two, if not more, different radios all at the same time!

How is it we have come to forget about radio and take it for granted in our highly-developed technological society? I think the answer is that radios are not as obvious as they were once upon a time. In the not-too-distant past, if you listened to the radio, you were looking at a separate box with buttons, dials and switches and a set of headphones or a pair of speakers. If you were a radio star, you held a microphone and faced a bewildering panel of carts and controls. If you talked on a two-way radio, you probably had a special license or it was part of your job and you either held a small walkie-talkie type box or you sat in front of a bunch of equipment with lots of buttons, dials, knobs, meters and switches. In any case, the radio part of the task you were performing was front and center. That?s not so now.

When do you think about radio today? Perhaps, most of us really give it serious thought when we?re riding in our cars or listening to our stereos at home. Otherwise, although the radios in our lives are present, they?re usually buried. When I was talking with a friend about the radios in the iPhone, she thought I was referring to all the radio apps out there for listening to broadcast stations streamed on the Internet. Despite the shrinking of radios into tiny chips on circuit boards hidden inside our favorite electronic devices, we?re using them more often today than we ever have at any time in the past. When we talk on a cordless or cell phone, we?re talking on a radio. When we use a laptop computer to go online from our favorite coffee shop, we?re on the air. Believe it or not, we are all radio stars!

What does all this mean for the world? I think we?re slowly forgetting about radio?s past and, in the process, we may be leaving many people in disadvantaged populations and developing nations behind. The advent of Internet streaming and satellite radio has been cited as justification for massive cutbacks in the availability of programming on the shortwave radio broadcast bands, despite the fact that these radios are the only way hundreds of millions of people may be able to gain timely access to entertainment and important information about their world.

The long-time switch from the inherently non-visual radio medium to television and, now, streaming video on the Internet has meant that it can be more challenging for blind people to enjoy many forms of entertainment that were once more accessible. This is probably a significant reason for the resurgence of old-time-radio listening in the blind community.

How about emergency communication? What happens when the cell towers are blown down in a hurricane? What would happen if a significant number of the satellites we rely on for communication and navigation suddenly became unavailable? What would the world?s survivors do in the event of a massive electromagnetic pulse or nuclear war? The uber-geeky amateur (ham) radio operators have the enthusiasm, innovative spirit, qualifications and access to older equipment it would take to communicate during an emergency and coordinate the reorganization of the world when our high-tech gadgets and infrastructure become useless.

Unfortunately, the world?s governments continue to deemphasize radio. Shortwave broadcasts to many parts of the world are cut every year. Fewer and fewer people are interested in ham radio and there?s no longer a Morse Code requirement for any class of amateur radio license in America and many other countries. Morse Code can cut through radio noise like no other mode of radio transmission, but who is going to know how to use it when it is needed most?

How can we continue to move forward into the bright future of a technology-driven world while ensuring our safety and promoting stability and security? I think one small thing we can do is to keep radio in our minds and think about it a little each day. When you?re checking your email, talking or tweeting on your iPhone, remember that you are using several tiny radios to make it all happen. When you?re listening to satellite radio or streaming your favorite station through ooTunes, think about all the people in the developing world who don?t have access to this content and remember that an older technology called shortwave radio can reach them if we ensure its continued existence. Finally, think about those of us who have passed numerous qualification exams and learned Morse Code to earn our ham radio licenses, which we may someday need to use as a means of providing life-saving communications services in the event of a disaster.

I?d love to hear from readers. What does radio mean to you? Please feel free to post your story in the comments or mention me, darrell on Twitter.

An Introduction to Aromatherapy and Its ... - New Health and Fitness

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

Figuring out what aromatherapy is, one simply has to look closer at its name, which obviously shows it is therapy based primarily on smells, fragrances or scents. However , in the truest sense of the word, distilled essences of plants should be used and not anything artificial or synthesised. Aromatherapy has lots of uses spanning everything from just relaxation to treatment of a wide range of symptoms, both psychological and physical. In this piece we'll be looking at aromatherapy and fancy oils, covering some interesting and useful facts

    .

Aromatherapy is in reality one of the most unfussy strategies for enjoying the benefits of the natural out of doors when you are inside. At one time, when people spent a lot more time out of doors, this might not have been an issue , however today, when a lot of our lives our spent within and working with technology, the healing whiffs of plans can have a weighty effect. That's the reason that one or two people enjoy having plants and flowers found inside their residences and at work. On the other hand, with aromatherapy, you are receiving an even more upfront experience of the plant, because in plenty of ways our sense of smell is even more instantaneous and powerful than our sight. So we can alter the mood of a room at once, by making use of the right essential use.

A diffuser is one way you can get the smell of essential oils into the atmosphere of a room or house. Electrical diffusers are the most well-liked, regardless of the proven fact that there are a wide range available for sale. It?s simply a widget that has to be connected into a wall socket and spreads the fragrance of a therapeutic oil across the room with the help of a fan. Another device used to spread the fragrance of important oils all though a room is the nebulizer, which actually breaks the oil down into separate molecules first. There are a few people who believe that this approach is more favorable because you're able to take in more of the indispensable oil when you breathe it. A lamp ring is another straightforward essential oil diffuser that simply needs to be placed over a bulb, with a few drops of oil in it, and the heat of the bulb disperses the fragrance into the room.

Myrrh, cedarwood, cinnamon and nutmeg were some of the more typically used oils in traditional Egypt, a point when aromatherapy was in use. Intricate scents were manufactured by the Egyptians with the assistance of fancy oils, and they were also used in the embalming of bodies. They were also used in spiritual ceremonies, something that virtually every religion around the world does in one sort or another. Later on the Romans and Greeks started using essential oils, which is how they spread into Europe. Apart from making great perfumes, a few individuals also noted that certain essential oils have healing features.

Aromatherapy?s acceptance is simply a rediscovery of an ancient practice that was employed internationally. There are a large range of great incentives to start getting into aromatherapy. You have lots of possibilities in terms of how to become involved in it or which essential oils you like. There?s no point in starting out with a complex approach. You can start by buying a bottle of a therapeutic oil that you like, or that you need to try, and maybe a diffuser of some type. We?ve looked at some practical and interesting sides of aromatherapy, but if you are interested, there?s lots more to explore. Other forms of therapy such as therapy over the phone are worth exploring also

On Home Improvement | Tenaciously Yours,

Naturally, I totally neglected to answer my own question.? I?m a Vanilla girl when it comes to The Soft-Serve Machine.??I like to think it does a better job of showcasing the sprinkles.? Unless I?m ordering a Blizzard with some sort of cookie pieces involved.? In which case, I may or may not Embrace Gluttony and order a Double Oreo Blizzard made with Chocolate.

    It?s never a straight answer.

    Kittens, it?s February.

    Like, when did that happen?

I mean, yes, I wholeheartedly embrace the natural movement of time and get that it should be February.? I just don?t understand how we went from waking up on New Year?s Day to finding ourselves in this place.

That it?s February leaves me cringing at the fact that all of the house projects I wanted to accomplish after the wedding?? Have been at a standstill in every sense of the word.

We?ve been living without nightstands for four months.? The second bedroom (AKA Marcus? Closet That Should Be An Office) is still wholly unorganized in a way that things shouldn?t be when Adults Are Present.

I mean, we?ve had the better part of two years to get things fixed up.? There is the small fact that with our old bed, we didn?t need nightstands, but that?s missing the point.

So this week, I put those things on my To Do list.? The nightstands and the second bedroom.

Because it would be nice to have somewhere to rest my cell phone as it charges at night.? To have a place to plant some extra lights in the room.? Not just?to brighten things up, but to add some sort of aesthetic touch.? Hell, we even have the lamps and shades.

Because the Too Big For The Room desk in our office has never been used for its intended purpose.? It just stands there as a holding pen for clutter that we don?t need in our lives.? And as a result, half of the room goes unused.? Which is comical when you only have two bedrooms to begin with.

Because it?s officially That Boring Part of winter where it?s Not Spring Yet, but we?re still along for the ride.?? By the time that the leaves are on the trees, we will have nightstands and we will have reclaimed our second bedroom.

What projects do you need to cross off of your long-term To Do List?

What Georgians Say About Newt Gingrich (ContributorNetwork)

On Super Tuesday, Mitt Romney has designs on taking down Newt Gingrich in his home state of Georgia. Gingrich is on the defensive, Associated Press reported, announcing he will spend the next week in his home state. Who will emerge victorious depends on the people of Georgia. Are they behind their former 20-year congressman or looking for change?

Here's some local perspective on Newt Gingrich:

    * "Newt is what we need in 2012. A strong president who doesn't back down or play 'Yes, ma'am' politics. I am less interested in his personal life and more interested on how he will get America back on track." -- Powless family, post on Times-Georgian

    * "At heart, Gingrich is a bully who backs down when confronted. ... He is well-skilled at creating and then dismantling strawmen. And he is supremely confident when he senses that he has succeeded in intimidating his target. But when the critical moment comes, he deflates." -- Jay Bookman, Atlanta Journal-Constitution blogger

    * "Gingrich's personality in this campaign isn't any different from the political face he has shown the world over the past 35 years. He's as feisty, outrageous, and sarcastic as he ever was. ... Gingrich has a way of coming back to life every time you think he's dead and buried." -- Tom Crawford, editor, Georgia Report

    * "Over the last few weeks, I have had a serious change of heart. While I initially supported Speaker Gingrich, his continued attacks upon the free enterprise system that has made our country great are particularly something I will not stand for." -- Georgia state rep. David Casas, endorsing Romney

    * "Newt is a very intelligent person. Nobody else in the GOP comes close to him. He would bring something new to the executive branch that hasn't been there for awhile." -- Gerald Johnson, former student and political opponent of Gingrich

    * "Newt Gingrich ain't no Southerner. I don't think people in this state, I don't think they see him as a Southerner." -- Jack Stenger, Georgian attending Atlanta rally for Romney

    * "I find things in each candidate with which I firmly agree, but I find most often that I am in agreement with Newt Gingrich. ... What Newt will bring to the presidency with his experience gained, lessons learned, leadership developed, wisdom culled will give America the best future." -- Mack Mattingly, former Republican senator from Georgia, endorsing Gingrich

    * "Once again the media are attempting to pick the Republican candidate instead of allowing the American people to make that decision. Newt Gingrich wins South Carolina by 12.5 percent, and it was reported as a slim victory. Mitt Romney wins Florida by 14 percent and it is touted as a landslide victory." -- Rants & Raves, Augusta Chronicle

Mass Effect: Infiltrator coming to iPad and iPhone, will offer unlockable content for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3

Gamers in the house will be well aware that Mass Effect 3 is launching next month, and it will be adding a lot of new tricks to the established sci-fi game franchise. One of those tricks is going to be a third-person shooter for iPad and iPhone called Mass Effect: Infiltrator, and playing it will not only be a lot of fun in its own right, but will advance your progress in the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC game as well. As far as I'm concerned, this is the single best implementation of cross-platform gaming I've seen to date.

(AP) ? Supporters of former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed rioted through the streets of the capital Wednesday, throwing petrol bombs at police and demanding he be reinstated.

The chaos erupted after Nasheed's successor, President Mohammed Waheed Hassan, appealed for a government of national unity to end the political turmoil that has wracked the country for months.

Nasheed said his resignation Tuesday was a coup and that he was ousted from office at gunpoint.

He demanded the resignation of Hassan, who was his vice president, and promised to fight to get back his job.

"We will come to power again," Nasheed told 2,000 supporters. "We will never step back. I will not accept this coup and will bring justice to the Maldivians."

He then led a street demonstration. Police responded by firing tear gas and arresting two parliamentarians from Nasheed's party.

Nasheed's supporters began rioting, throwing fire bombs and vandalizing a private TV station that had been critical of Nasheed's government.

Minnesota food company recalls eggs in 34 states

(AP) ? A Minnesota food company said Friday it is recalling more than a million hard-cooked eggs distributed to 34 states after testing revealed some may be contaminated with listeria.

Some 15,000 pails of eggs in brine, sold for institutional use, are being recalled, Michael Foods spokeswoman Diane Sparish said.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said the eggs were produced at the company's plant in Wakefield, Neb., and were bought by food distributors and manufacturers and not sold directly to retailers. There have been no reports of illness connected to the eggs, the agency said.

Lab testing by a third party revealed that some eggs may have been contaminated and the company determined that a repair project in a packaging room was the likely source of contamination, Sparish said in an email to The Associated Press. She said more than a million eggs were being recalled.

Michael Foods has taken a number of corrective steps to address the issue and prevent recurrence, she said.

Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy people may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, the infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The eggs are sold under six brand names: Columbia Valley Farms; GFS; Glenview Farms; Papetti's; Silverbrook; and Wholesome Farms.

The states included in the recall include: Alabama; Arkansas; Arizona; California; Colorado; Florida; Georgia; Iowa; Illinois; Indiana; Kansas; Kentucky; Louisiana; Michigan; Minnesota; Missouri; Mississippi; Montana; North Carolina; North Dakota; Nebraska; New Jersey; Nevada; Ohio; Oklahoma; Oregon; Pennsylvania; South Carolina; Tennessee; Texas; Utah; Washington; Wisconsin; and West Virginia.

Army Leadership FM 6-22 (FM 22-100) (Paperback) ~ US Army Cover ArtFrom this week?s reading, the book goes a little further into?leading people, leaders developing themselves, subordinates and organizations, and achieving mission accomplishment.

Leader intellect is what you know and think. How you act or what you do in a situation depends on your mind. What you?ve learned ahead of time and what you are thinking will drive your actions.? A leader must utilize their mental agility, judgment, innovation, interpersonal tact, and their tactical and technical knowledge.

Leaders serve to provide purpose, direction and motivation.? Leaders go about this by:?

    • Setting a clear direction?
    • Enforcing standards?
    • Taking care of their people to ensure they remain productive and successful in their duties?
    • Working alongside various levels of an organization, where many departments and cross-functional teams are directly and indirectly tied to the project, but may not be under their authority?
    • Leading by example, serving as a role model to all of the people they encounter?
    • Communicating their intentions so that it is clearly understood to achieve the goals and tasks necessary for mission accomplishment.

Within the Army?s competency-based leader model, there are core leader competencies that fall into three main categories derived from the basic parts of our leadership definition:

Each of these categories has within it competencies that a leader must possess. ?Remember that these competencies are mutually supporting. ?You need to do some of each of them. ?As a leader (and a follower) you need to find the right balance?different leaders in different jobs and organizations will allocate different attention to competencies depending on the situation.

The leader who leads provides vision through purpose, motivation, universal respect, and direction to guide others to inspire action.? They extend one?s influence beyond the chain of command to build trusting partnerships and alliances to accomplish complex work. ?Leaders build consensus among individuals within and outside the organization, while resolving conflicts.? ?is conveyed by communicating and setting the example, while enforcing standards and instilling discipline.

A leader leads by displaying character at all times, putting the organization and subordinates above personal self-interest, career and comfort.? They project confidence, especially under adverse conditions, displaying the moral courage to stand firm on values, principles and convictions.? Leaders who take full responsibility for their decisions and actions display such moral courage.? And, along with moral courage, the leader demonstrates competence; tactical and technical knowledge.

The results that the leader achieves through their people depend on good communication.? Communication is not a one-way street.? While the leader must clearly state the goals for action, they should also be an active listener.? To be effective in their communication, the leader and the followers should ensure that there is shared understanding about what needs to be done, what the desired results should be, and the progress towards those results.? Good leaders keep their finger on the pulse of their organization by getting out to coach, to listen and to clarify.

The leader who develops leads organizations by creating and maintaining a positive environment that fosters teamwork, promotes cohesion, and encourages initiative and acceptance of responsibility.? A leader should also maintain a healthy balance between caring for people and focusing on the mission.? A positive climate is developed through fairness & inclusiveness and open & candid communication.?

Developing includes assessing needs to improve self, others and the organization.? The leader must seek self-improvement, mastering their profession at every level.? They must make a full commitment to lifelong learning and self-improvement, ultimately acquiring new skills necessary to adapt to changes in their environment.? Preparing for expected and unexpected challenges and developing self-awareness, the leader should strive to expand their knowledge.?

The leader must invest adequate time and effort to develop individual subordinates and build effective teams.? Success demands a fine balance of teaching, counseling, coaching and mentoring.? The Army, after all, is a learning organization, gaining strength from the experience of its people and organization to improve the way it operates.? The leader should, therefore, develop the learning environment that supports learning among its leaders and people.

    A leader develops others by:?

    • Assessing developmental needs?
    • Developing them on the job?
    • Supporting professional and personal growth?
    • Helping them learn?
    • Counseling, coaching and mentoring?
    • Building team skills and processes

?Soldiers learn to be good leaders from good leaders.? ? Richard A. Kidd, Sergeant Major of the Army (1991-1995)

The leader who achieves focuses on what needs to be accomplished.? They have an expeditionary mindset and can adapt to unanticipated, changing, and uncertain situations.? Achieving in the short-term is about getting results.? But, in the long-term, it is about setting the vision to obtain objectives.?

Getting results embraces all actions to get the job done on time and to standard; planning, preparing, execution.? The leader provides direction, guidance, and clear priorities, considering intended and unintended consequences, guiding teams in what needs to be done and how.? Developing and executing plans for mission and task accomplishment involves anticipating how to carry out what needs to be done, managing the resources used to get it done, conducting the necessary actions, and adapting to changes that might occur.? Accomplishing missions consistently and ethically involves monitoring organizational, group, and individual performance to identify strengths and correct weaknesses.? A successful mission requires the reinforcement of good performance.? And, of course, a failed mission requires a little more evaluation and review to assess what may have gone wrong, learning from those lessons, and improving performance for the next mission.

Leaders who have the competencies to lead, develop and achieve also have the ?BE ? KNOW ? DO? necessary to be successful in today?s United States Army.? And, when these leaders apply these competencies, the Army wins America?s wars.? As General Gordon Sullivan, retired former Chief of Staff of the Army (1991-1995), said to Third Army staff following the Operation Desert Storm victory in 1991, ?The American People expect only one thing from us: That we will win.? What you have done is no more than they expect.? You have won.?
